What we do

Tuning, and the diagnostics that make a tune worth having

Four wheel drive diesels are the bulk of the work. Utes that tow, cruisers that tour, and the occasional one that has been tuned badly somewhere else and needs sorting out.

01Core work

Custom ECU tuning

Every tune is written for the vehicle in front of us on the rollers, not pulled off a shelf. The file gets built, loaded and proven on the dyno before the ute leaves the shed.

02Core work

Multi-map setups

More than one tune loaded at once so the vehicle can change character on the fly. A quiet economy map for the run to town, a stronger map when there is a van on the back.

03Core work

Towing tunes

Set up for weight behind you. Torque where it is actually useful in the towing rev range, rather than a headline power figure that only shows up at the top of the tacho.

04Core work

Diesel performance

The bread and butter here. Four wheel drive utes and touring cruisers that need to pull hard, run cool and stay driveable on a long inland highway.

05Workshop

Diagnostics

Codes read properly and chased to the actual cause. Recent jobs have included a MAF fault and a fuel delivery problem, both found and sorted the same day.

06Workshop

DPF cleaning

Diesel particulate filters that keep filling up and demanding a manual regen are usually telling you something about how the vehicle is running. Worth getting looked at before it gets expensive.

Not sure which of those you need? Ring Dan and describe what the vehicle is doing.

On the dyno

The numbers come off the rollers, not off a brochure

Every job gets a before run and an after run on the same dyno, on the same day, so what you are looking at is your vehicle and nobody else's. Below is a real sheet from the shed. Blue is the standard tune. Red is the same vehicle once Dan had finished with it.

Standard

158.2 HP

365.9 Nm

Tuned here

210.3 HP

646.0 Nm

That is one vehicle on one day. Yours will read differently, because every engine, every fuel, every set of mods and every ambient temperature is different. That is exactly why the run happens in front of you rather than being promised in advance.

Multi-map

One vehicle, four different personalities

A multi-map setup puts several tunes in the vehicle at once and lets you pick between them. Gentle when you are pottering about town or watching the fuel gauge on a long run, stronger when there is a van behind you and a hill in front of you. Here is a real four map file written in this shed for a 2024 Troopcarrier.

Tune 2

431 Nm
Tune 3

Tuned for the way you actually drive it

A vehicle loaded with gear, a van or boat on the back and three hundred kilometres of inland highway ahead of it is a very different thing to a dyno chart. Towing setups get their torque where you will genuinely use it, and the tune is written to keep temperatures sensible while it does the work.

That matters more than a big headline number, and it is the difference between a vehicle that feels quick on paper and one that is easier to live with on a trip.

Diagnostics

If it is throwing a light, find out why before you tune it

A DPF that keeps filling up and asking for a manual regen is a symptom, not the whole story. So is a fault code that somebody has cleared three times. Codes get read properly here and chased back to the actual cause, because there is no point writing a tune on top of a problem.

  • Fault codes read and diagnosed, not just cleared
  • DPF cleaning and the questions that come with it
  • Sensor and fuel delivery faults chased to the source
  • The vehicle goes back on the dyno once it is right

About Dan

One bloke, one dyno, and a fair bit of West Wyalong traffic

Dan's Dyno is Dan, a Dyno Dynamics chassis dyno and a shed on Neeld Street. There is no service desk and no upsell script. You ring, you describe what the vehicle is doing, and the two of you work out whether there is a tune in it or whether something needs fixing first.

Word has travelled a good deal further than the Bland Shire. People have driven down from Toowoomba to get on these rollers, and one review on here is from someone whose Troopcarrier had been tuned badly in Adelaide and was on its way to wrecking the particulate filter before Dan pulled it apart mid trip.

Manta and Unichip gear lives on the workshop wall. The dyno does the arguing.

“Dan is an absolute legend. He genuinely saved our holiday and got us back on the road when things could’ve gone very wrong. Our Troopcarrier had been incorrectly tuned in Adelaide, which was on track to clog and destroy the DPF. Dan stepped in last minute, diagnosed the issue properly, fixed the MAF fault (P0101), and completely sorted the car.”

“He then installed us an incredible multi-map tune that he created that has absolutely woken the Cruiser up — it drives, tows and performs way better. From start to finish, Dan was effortless to deal with: knowledgeable, honest, and genuinely invested in getting the job done right.”
